40k Followers But Zero Website Visits: Why Facebook Sabotages Your Traffic

This is a newsletter I sent to my subscribers last week. I publish the newsletters on my website; however, I edit out some information from the public versions.

In my last newsletter, I wrote about how I did not get into the Facebook Bonus program.

Trying to get at least something out of the FB page, I decided to experiment with directing Facebook traffic to my website.

But here’s the thing—Facebook typically hates sending viewers to external URLs.

First, I tried the basic approach: posting the link in the first comment. The results were practically zero. The type of Facebook posts I created didn’t incentivize viewers to look for a link to the post.

Next, I tried responding to comments with relevant post links that matched what commenters were discussing. This approach worked somewhat better, though it had a limited impact since comments typically receive low visibility.

Then, I started monitoring viral posts and changing their text to include URLs pointing to relevant posts on my site.

This significantly increased my website traffic… but tanked my Facebook engagement 😫 And without engagement, nobody sees your Facebook posts anymore 🤷‍♀️😭

This strategy had long-lasting negative effects on my page: the reach decreased significantly and did not go up. By then, I had stopped running the ads I’d used to get followers for the Bonus Program; however, I had to restart them since it seemed the only way to revive my page.

The ads didn’t help much since I used a small budget (your pockets are already full, Zuckerberg 😒), so I stopped them and simply removed the URLs from the old posts.

This helped.

But I was fed up with Facebook’s frustrating behavior. I continued to lose money, this time indirectly through my VA’s work—they created new posts and managed engagement.

I decided to throw in the towel for now and move on to other activities

In total, I spent ***edited out*** dollars on the ads 😭

My Facebook page now sits at 40K followers and is waiting for me to revamp my strategy and find a balance between engagement and driving website traffic.

Recently, I stumbled upon this video by one of the Facebook Bonus Program course creators published 8 months ago:

***edited out***

Well, it might have been working 8 months ago, but it doesn’t work now.

Also, the website’s niche appears to play an important role in Facebook traffic success. Content that both encourages viewers to click through and share performs best. Travel might be an ideal niche since it combines urgency, news value, and natural shareability.

I am not in the travel niche 🤷‍♀️ Oh well.

What about you? Have you tried to send Facebook traffic to your website?

Go to the comments, and let’s chat!

Otherwise, have a wonderful weekend ❤️
